How to choose a pet hotel before the long holiday

Visit first and ask about vets, updates and emergency plans before you book.

Pet hotels fill up fast during holidays, but availability alone is not a good reason to book.

Visit first

  • Clean rooms with good ventilation and no stale smell
  • Separate areas for dogs and cats, and by size
  • Space to exercise and a walking schedule

Questions to ask

  1. Is someone on duty 24 hours a day?
  2. Is there a vet on site or on call?
  3. How often do they send photos or videos?
  4. Which vaccinations and flea or tick treatments are required?
  5. What happens if your pet stops eating or gets sick?

What to pack

  • Their usual food, portioned per meal
  • A blanket or toy that smells of home
  • Medication with written instructions
