10 questions to ask before renting a condo with pets

From building rules and size limits to extra deposits, ask these before you sign the lease.

"Pet friendly" in a listing is only the start. Before paying a deposit, go through this list.

Rules

  1. Who allows pets? The building (juristic person) or only the unit owner?
  2. Type and size. Some buildings accept cats only, or dogs under 10 kg.
  3. How many? Usually one or two per unit.
  4. Common areas. Must pets be carried, leashed or use a service lift?

Costs

  1. Extra pet deposit and how it is returned
  2. Cleaning fees for carpets or curtains when moving out
  3. Fines if neighbours complain about noise or smell

Paperwork

  1. An up-to-date vaccination record
  2. A neutering certificate (some buildings ask)
  3. Put the pet clause in the lease in writing

Tip: look for the "Building allows pets" badge on PetHome listings. It reflects the building rule, not just the owner's permission.
