Buying a house for a large dog: what to check
Fence height, flooring, shade and estate rules: check them all before you buy.

A home for a Golden Retriever or Labrador needs a few extra checks.
Outside
- Fences at least 1.5 m high with no gaps to squeeze through
- A lawn that drains well after rain
- Shade from trees or a roof to prevent heatstroke
Inside
- Matte tiles or non-slip vinyl that are kind to joints
- Gentle stairs, or a ground-floor bedroom for senior dogs
- An outdoor tap and a washing area
Estate rules
- Some estates limit the number or breed of dogs
- Ask about walking rules in shared areas and parks
